Flutists are a common sight back at home in Nigeria. They “spice up” every traditional occasion and they also add color to traditional ceremonies. The flute comes in different sizes and shapes even though quite frankly my subject is a Kaakaki Flutist. The flute/horn is usually made from cow horn. They are common sights in the Northern part of Nigeria and they often accompany Emirs.

Emirs are highly prominent and powerful traditional monarchs. Apart from their highly exalted traditional stools, these royal fathers are financially solid and have a lot of influence on their subjects and on the goings on around the country.

Wordpress 2.8.2 is out and I don’t know if I should upgrade or not. Especially after I had some problems with the Wordpress 2.8.1 version. I believe this one is meant to address the short comings of the earlier version. Have you upgraded and did you encounter any problems?????

I came across a quiz on what your taste in Music says about you, on Vivien Blackburn’s blog and I decided to give it a try. Wasn’t too surprised with the results though. But here are my results

Your musical tastes are reflective and complex. (I totally agree!!!)

You are intellectual to the point of being cerebral. (this is a perfect and accurate nail on the head)

You are very open to new experiences, and even more open to new ideas and theories.(mmmh………nice!! Never thought otherwise)

Wisdom and personal accomplishment are important to you.(True)

You are naturally sophisticated.(didn’t know that)

You are drawn to art, especially art by independent artists.(of course)

You are likely to be financially well off… and not because you were born that way. (To this I say a big AMEN………so be it!!!!)

So what does your taste in music say about you? Check it up  here

Yesterday Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States of America. As an African living in Africa and as a dreamer it was so easy to identify with what Barack Obama truly stands for and represents to millions of people around the world. What happened told (and still tells) me that I can do what ever I set my mind on (not that I ever doubted in anyway.) But it goes a long way to boost my confidence and determination. Many who do not know how challenging being an African is would not understand why so many people reacted (and are still reacting) to Barack’s historic step up the way they did.

I do not agree with him in too many things but it does not in anyway prevent me from learning one or two things. As an artist, I have a lot of dreams and aspirations. As an African trying to gain a tiny bit of recognition for my art in the midst of so many other better advantaged artists, there are so many challenges that lie ahead. But like the saying goes “the patient dog eats the fattest bone”…………..Like Barack Obama, anyone who dares to dream will one day have his/her dreams fulfilled. It only takes time and determination.

I came across this quiz about how much I knew about Barack Obama and I was shocked at my score? Got 9/10 Questions Right . Yet again what did I expect when the only thing on the news is Barack Obama!!!. Anyway, here’s a breakdown of my result:

You are a probably a news junkie, Obama fan, or both. (I will go with News Junkie)

You know a lot about Barack Obama – including his politics, history, and family.

It’s likely you’re a very knowledgeable person and quite well read.(Impressive)

You can’t stand ignorant people, no matter what their political persuasion is.(quite true……….as apolitical as I am I believe people should at least want to know the basics about anything)

So how much do you know about the 44th president of the United States of America? Check  here.

Charcoal Drawing of Kalahari San (Bushman) dancer

Charcoal drawing of a Kalahari San (Bushman) dancer

Kalahari (San) child dancer

This is another drawing of a Kalahari (San) dancer……………this time a child dancer. I have always been fascinated with the sight of these people. Watching them perform is always a breathtaking experience even though majority of the dance comprises stamping of the feet hard on the ground. And they always dress in simple yet natural way. Oft wearing beads made from Ostrich eggs and clothes from animal hides. To read more about these people see my earlier post on Kalahari (San) bushmen of Botswana.

I did this drawing with charcoal and ink. It has been sprayed/covered with a protective layer of fixative to prevent smudging and is ready for framing.

Painting of African drummers: Step 1

Marriage in my traditional African culture is always a 3 part event which starts with the man coming to see the girl’s father with some elders in his family and ends with the exchange of palm wine between the man and the girl.  To cut cost, many people do everything at the same time while most split them up into 3 different occasions.

Even though marriage in a Church is important……the traditional marriage is the most important because without it the marriage cannot be recognized by the family elders. And recognition by the family elders is very important because of the way the African family is structured. Their is a very strong sense of family in Africa and it is very common to see families living together in one compound. When getting married, young people always know and understand that with marriage comes the addition of a whole new family.

Part of the highlights of every traditional marriage ceremony is the presence of traditional singers and drummers. These people are always colorfully dressed and add a lot color and fun to the whole event.

With this post I will be starting a painting of a group of African drummers who were present during my traditional marriage ceremony. I will be using a reference photograph from the set of pictures taken during the ceremony.

I usually start off my paintings with a sketch (sometimes I paint straight on the canvas without a sketch!! ). Below is the sketch I made with Charcoal pencil on canvas cloth.
